When We Need To Talk, But Don’t

Why do we hesitate and hold back instead of taking a chance to talk and open up?  We reach out then stop; an avalanche of words held back by a breath of doubt, a reluctant pause of uncertainty.  For with the tumble of words comes the unstoppable rush of emotions, the release of which leaves us vulnerable and weak.  We long to share the burdens we carry, to have their weight slowly eased from our back and replaced by a gentle, calming hand.

Perhaps we are practiced in the art of selflessness, and so we chose to take on the burdens of others before acknowledging our own.  Or maybe we have taken that first cautious step toward trusting another, but stumbled when their back was turned.  We search for trust, but are sometimes blinded by deceit.  Whatever the reason, it is a daunting endeavor for those of us who struggle often with this.

If you are holding on to your own set of troubles, unable to find the right time or person to share them with, please know that you are not alone.  Many of us feel this way.  And if you are someone who sees the flicker of hesitation in the eyes of the person next to you, consider asking them to share with you.  We all worry that we will inconvenience one another with our problems, but if we each take turns holding out our hands, we can share the weight together so that no one feels that they should struggle alone.

  1. So well written! I’m a big believer in that everyone needs SOMEONE that they can be completely honest with without hesitation. Either a friend or therapist or maybe multiple friends that you kind of pick what you say to who, but either way it never helps to hold things in.

  2. Interesting thoughts. I agree when you say most of us feel like a inconvenience to another…especially during times of confrontation. But in the end, we should focus more on our individual needs and wants. If we aren’t happy, there’s no other best way to reach peace other than confronting our feelings. It’s hard, yes, but as a result, we gain realization of the truth. It’s not always what we want to hear…but it’s always better to know the truth than live with a back and forth war with our own mind.

  3. So beautifully said. Sometimes I try and listen to everyone so I can forget about my own troubles and worries. Some might think I am so happy and fulfilled only because they don’t hear about anything negative. My way of coping with the world outside. So many people disappointed me that it’s hard to find one to trust and confide in. Sometimes writing is all we have

As social beings, we are conditioned to live in a society but yet we are always taught to hold our thoughts as you have rightly pointed out, we could be an inconvenience to the listener or what if they judged us by our words. But keeping our thoughts within our self leads to the little bit of worry taking the shape of anxiety and then with time, blowing up into depression. We need a friend, a partner or a means to vent it out or simply forget about it.
